Police call off chase because of traffic
after police supervisors decided it posed a danger to others.
The Mustang driver pulled over briefly, then sped away onto Greenfield Drive and then to First Street. Officers stopped the pursuit on Broadway because of heavy traffic, police said.
The boy picked up the pipe bomb near the school, on Calle Albara near Avenida Apollinaria, and walked it several blocks to his home on Calle Lorenzana, sheriff Sgt. Jose Sanchez said.
The boy parents called the Sheriff Department, whose bomb squad responded and removed the explosive device. No one was injured, and no one has been arrested.
The school, in the Cajon Valley Union School District, has about 550 students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
The bomb was made with a small construction pipe with both ends crimped. It was filled with an explosive material and had a fuse sticking out of one end, sheriff Sgt. Rose Kurupas said.
Kurupas warned that anyone who finds what appears to be an explosive device should not touch it or pick it up. Instead, she recommended contacting law enforcement officials immediately and letting them handle it.

A man reportedly saw a motorist and two boys get out of a black Chevrolet Camaro and grab a woman purse.
Deputies responded, interviewed witnesses and broadcast a description of the robbers and the getaway car.
Minutes later, Deputy Christi Licudine saw a Camaro being driven slowly a few blocks away, one of its front tires punctured, Kurupas said. She ordered the motorist to stop near Jamacha Road and state Route 125.
Deputies later searched the Camaro and found the victim straw purse, Louis Vuitton wallet, day planner and about $20, Kurupas said.
Two boys, ages 16 and 17, who were riding in the Camaro were also arrested and turned over to their parents, Kurupas said. Officials said the boys would face charges in Juvenile Court of conspiring to commit a crime.
